Hoverboards are literally the hottest trend right now. Everybody wants them, but there are many investigations into the toys catching fire. A lot of debate has been bouncing around regarding the safety (and “classification”) of them. For example, while they’re called hoverboards, they’re more electrically motorized skateboards. Currently, they’re illegal in New York. For California, new laws regarding the usage of these hoverboards will go into effect beginning January 1. Here’s what you need to know:

  • The boards can only be used on streets where the posted speed limit is no more than 35 mph, unless there is a bike lane.
  • The board may not exceed a speed of 15 mph.
  • Riders must wear a helmet.
  • Riders must be at least 16 years old.
  • Riders will be cited with a DUI if they are using the hoverboard while under the influence.
  • Boards must be accessorized with reflectors and/or lights for nighttime visibility.

Violating any of the above laws can result in a fine of up to $250.

If anyone is ever arrested for violating any of these laws, or somehow are involved with an incident like hitting a hoverboard rider with their car and get arrested, Oakdale Bail Bond Store will help with bail.
